Jannu (now officially known as Kumbhakarna) lays 11km to the West of the summit of Kanchenjunga . Notwithstanding lower, it is a very difficult peak, with a summit pyramid that is steep on all sides. The first ascent and "standard" route is a complex and difficult, though not extreme, route up the southeast Ridge, from the Yamatari Glacier. Neighboring peak Jannu East, 7468m, was unclimbed as of 1997. On the climbing side, no experience is necessary, however you must be familiar with alpine environments and must understand the risks that camping and climbing above the snowline posture. Previous Nepal or Pakistan trekking experience or long route hiking experience is desirable. If you have any doubts, please discuss with us.
Kumbhakara Mountain’s name is the derivative word from the giant Kumbhakarna; who was the younger brother of giant Rawan; who had fought with Lord Ram in theRramayan age. Giant Kumbhakarna used to sleep six month and used to eat six months. Once, when he was doing a hard penance, Lord Bhrama was very much pleased and asked him to get some boon; and the giant said that, “ let me have a boon of six month’s sleeping and six month’s eating.” Lord Bhrama offered him this blessing; and then after that, he used to sleep in such sleep that, if some one would march ahead through his body, he wouldn’t notice. So in Nepal, if some one sleeps a lot, he is said to be a sleeper like the Kumbhakarna giant. So this Kumbhakarna Himal’s name has been derived from the giant Kumbhakarna name.
