Mount Kumbhakarna 7,710m. Expedition (Jannu) spring 2018

Kumba Karna Expedition

Mount Kumbhakarna 7,710m. (Jannu) lies 11km to the west of the summit of Kanchanjungha. In spite of standing at a lower height, it is a very difficult peak, with a summit pyramid that is steep on all sides. The first ascent and "standard" route is a complex and difficult, though not extreme, route up the southeast Ridge, from the Yamatari Glacier. Neighboring peak Jannu East, 7468m, was unclimbed as of 1997. On the climbing side, no experience is necessary, however you must be familiar with alpine environments and must understand the risks that camping and climbing above the snowline posture. Previous Nepal or Pakistan trekking experience or long route hiking experience is desirable. If you have any doubts, please discuss with us.

Mount Kumbhakarna got its name from the giant Kumbhakarna who was the younger brother of Rawan who fought with Lord Ram in the Epic Mythology of Ramayan .Giant Kumbhakarna sleeps for six months and eats for six months. Once, when he was meditating for a hard penance, Lord Bhrama was very much pleased and asked him to have him some boon; and the giant said, “Let me have a boon of six month’s sound sleep and six month’s relishing food.” Lord Bhrama offered him this blessing; and thence he started to sleep in such long sound sleep that even if someone marched right through his body, he wouldn’t notice. So in Nepal, if someone sleeps a lot, he is given the name of Kumbhakarna, the giant. So this Kumbhakarna Himal’s name has been derived from the giant Kumbhakarna name as it seems sleeping soundly without being disturbed that very few expeditions are made so far.
