Mt. Manaslu (8163m) is the 8th highest mountain in the world. Located in Gorkha district in northwestern part of Nepal, Manaslu is one of most prized trophies for mountaineer's world over. Locals who follow Buddhist teachings have an ancient Tibetan name for the mountain: Kutang. Kutang is a term used out of reverence, for locals believe that the sight of the mountain brings untold merits of the highest order. The mountain is regarded as an epitome of purity and enlightenment. The contemporary name ‘Manaslu’ came from Sanskrit word Manias, meaning "intellect" or "soul".

The peak was first climbed on 9 May 1953 by a Japanese expedition team. Just as the British considered Everest their mountain, Manaslu has always been the Japanese mountain. When the Japanese women's team led by Kyoko Sato climbed the peak May 4, 1974, they became the first women's team to climb an 8000m. A Japanese expedition team surveyed the mountain as early as 1952. The team approached the peak from the Budi Gandaki valley and made an unsuccessful attempt in 1953. The mountain would have been climbed the following year in 1954 or 1955 had the villagers not refused the team to enter Sama Gaon. It was only after the Japanese team made large donations for the rebuilding of the local monastery was the team allowed to enter Manaslu region.

The second time it was successfully climbed was in 1971. Five members died in the spring of 197 due to an avalanche. Manaslu is a technically challenging mountain to climb with plenty of rewarding risks for mountaineering. Monterosa Treks & Expedition has over 30 years' experience in organizing professional mountaineering expeditions in the Himalayas. Our team consists of the most experienced team of Sherpa climbers, high altitude porters, cooks and ground handling personnel. To make your expedition run smoothly we take care of all your requirements, from obtaining climbing permits from government departments to hiring experienced guides and arranging lodging and accommodation.
