Mount Kumbhakarna 7,710m. Expedition (Jannu) autumn 2012

Kumbakarna Expedition

Mount Jannu (now officially known as Kumbhakarna) lies 11km to the West summit of Kanchenjunga. Though it's lower, it is a very difficult peak, with a summit that is vertical on all sides. The first ascent and The superb route is complex and difficult, though not disciplinable route  to the southeast ridge, from the Yamatari Glacier. Neighboring peak Jannu East, 7468m, was unclimbed till to 1997.Mostly to the climbing, no experience is necessary; however you must be familiar with mountaineering knowledge and must understand the risks of camping and climbing above the snowline areas. Previously trekking experience or long route hiking experience is advantageous. If you have any doubts, please discuss with us.

Kumbhakara Mountain’s name is the derivative word from the giant Kumbhakarna; who was the younger brother of giant Rawan; who had fought with Lord Ram in the Ramayan age. Giant Kumbhakarna used to sleep six month and used to eat for six months.

Once, when he was doing a hard penance, Lord Brahma was very much pleased and asked him to get some boon from him to make him happy; and the giant said that, " let me have a boon of six month's sleeping and six month's eating." Lord Brahma offered him this blessing. And that, he used to sleep in such sleep that, if some one would march ahead on through his body, he wouldn't notice it, So in Nepal , if some one sleeps a lot, he is said to be a sleeper like the Kumbhakarna giant. So this Kumbhakarna Himal's name has been derived from the giant Kumbhakarna's name.
