Mani Rimdu Festival in Thyanboche:
The colorful and dramatic Mani Rimdu festival is performed in the monastery in Thyanboche in October and November every year. The final 3 days of this 17 days festival are the most important and include a spectacular series of masked dance performed by the monks. These are said to depict the battle between Buddhism and the ancient Bon religion. Gods and demons fight for the hearts and minds of the local community, the ultimate triumph being the resentment of Buddhism as the true and guiding light of the Sherpa people.
Although the Many Rimdu festival is exciting and entertaining to the local community, no one forgets that this is a religious ritual, one with ancient Tibetan roots and profound significance. Prayer is an integral part of Mani Rimdu as is sacrifice.
