A Swiss expedition team climbed Mount Lhotse in 1956 AD. The lower peak, Mount Lhotse Shar (8383m.), is sometimes considered an independent peak at 8000m., Within the Everest massif, this mountain, which literally means "South Peak", is just south of Everest. Although Mount Everest has seen an increase in activity in recent years, Lhotse can be reached through Everest's South Col. An international team attempted to climb Mount Lhotse for the first time in 1955. In the course of this expedition, Erwin Schneider began work on the first of a series of high-quality "Schneider maps of the Everest region". The Swiss expedition that conquered Everest in 1956 also climbed Mount Lhotse from the camp below South Col. Mount Lhotse Shar was successfully conquered by an Austrian expedition in 1970. Other routes were later attempted by Japanese, South Koreans, and Germans. Everest and Lhotse expedition base camps are identical, and the climbing route until the south col of Everest follows the same route. After reaching the South Col, the climbing route heads south towards Lhotse. The best time to climb Lhotse is in spring every year.
