A Japanese team climbed Mount Manaslu's north face in 1953, at an elevation of 8163 meters. Sanskrit language names this mountain Soul or Intellect, like that of Lake Manasarovar near Tibet's sacred Mount Kailash. Since the Japanese climbed this mountain first, they consider it to be Japanese Mountain, just as the British considered Everest their mountain. HW Tillman and Jimmy Roberts photographed Manaslu during a trek in 1950, but a Japanese expedition made the first real survey of the peak in 1952. A Japanese team made the first serious attempt on the peak from the Budi Gandaki valley in 1953 and another team followed in 1954, but as the villagers of Sama Gaon (Village) claim that the first team was responsible for an avalanche that destroyed a monastery, they refuse to allow them to go on the expedition. The expedition was set up to climb Ganesh Himal.

After a large donation was made for the reconstruction of the monastery, subsequent Japanese expeditions, including the one that made the first ascent in 1956, took place in an atmosphere of mistrust and animosity. The second Japanese expedition was successful in 1971. An avalanche killed five South Korean climbers in April 1972 during an attempt on the expedition in 1971. Ten Sherpa's made the fourth ascent of Mount Manaslu in 1972 as part of a Tyrolean expedition that climbed from Marshyangdi valley. There are thousands of tourists climbing Manaslu each year, as it is one of the most popular and spectacular mountains in the world.
